What Should Be in Your Child’s Daycare Bag? A Helpful Checklist

Sending your little one off to daycare is an exciting step — but it also comes with preparation. One of the best ways to ensure your child feels comfortable and cared for throughout the day is by packing a well-stocked daycare bag. Having the right items not only supports your child’s daily needs but also helps teachers provide the best possible care.

To make it easy, here’s a helpful checklist of what to pack in your child’s daycare bag:

1. Extra Clothes

Accidents, spills, or weather changes happen! Pack at least two complete sets of extra clothes, including socks and underwear. For infants, add a few onesies and extra sleepers.

2. Diapers and Wipes

If your child isn’t potty trained yet, send enough diapers for the day (or week, if allowed). Include a full pack of wipes, diaper cream, and disposable bags for soiled items.

3. Comfort Item

Many children find comfort in a small stuffed animal, blanket, or pacifier. Having a familiar item from home can help ease transitions and provide emotional security during nap times or new situations.

4. Bottles, Formula, or Breast Milk

For infants, pack clearly labeled bottles with formula or breast milk. Include instructions for preparation if needed. Older toddlers may need a sippy cup or water bottle.

5. Meals and Snacks

Check with your daycare about what food they provide. If you need to send meals, pack them in labeled containers that are easy for teachers to manage. Don’t forget utensils if necessary.

6. Nap Time Essentials

If your child naps at daycare, include items like a small blanket, crib sheet (if required), or a sleep sack for infants. Some children also like to bring a soft pillow.

7. Seasonal Gear

Pack according to the weather:

  • Summer: sunhat, sunscreen, light sweater.

  • Winter: warm coat, hat, mittens, boots.

  • Rainy days: raincoat and boots.

8. Medication (If Needed)

If your child requires medication, follow your daycare’s policies for labeling and providing instructions. Always hand medications directly to a teacher.

9. Communication Notebook or Folder

Some parents like to keep a small notebook or folder for daily updates between home and daycare. This can be helpful for sharing routines, reminders, or special notes.

Pro Tip: Label everything with your child’s name — bottles, clothes, comfort items, and even shoes. This ensures nothing gets lost and makes it easier for teachers to keep track of belongings.
