Snowy days can be exciting for children—filled with curiosity, play, and seasonal fun. While winter weather brings opportunities for learning and exploration, it also requires extra care to keep children safe. Snow safety is especially important for young children who are still learning how to navigate slippery surfaces and cold temperatures.

Dressing for Winter Safety

Proper clothing is one of the most important parts of snow safety. Children should be dressed in warm layers to protect them from the cold while allowing comfortable movement.

Helpful winter clothing tips include:

  • Warm coats that fully zip or button

  • Hats that cover ears

  • Gloves or mittens to protect hands

  • Waterproof boots with good traction

  • Extra socks or clothing when possible

Labeling winter items helps ensure everything goes home with the right child.

Outdoor Play and Supervision

Outdoor play is valuable for children, even during winter, when conditions are safe. However, snowy or icy surfaces require close supervision. Caregivers should check play areas for ice, ensure pathways are clear, and limit outdoor time based on weather conditions.

Children should be reminded to:

  • Walk carefully instead of running on snow or ice

  • Stay within designated play areas

  • Follow teacher instructions at all times

Preventing Slips and Falls

Slips and falls are common concerns during snowy weather. Wearing proper footwear, clearing walkways, and helping children enter and exit buildings safely can reduce risks. Holding hands, using railings, and taking slow steps all help keep children safe.

Safe Drop-Off and Pick-Up

Snowy conditions can make drop-off and pick-up more challenging. Families are encouraged to allow extra time, watch for slippery areas, and follow any winter safety guidelines provided by the childcare center.

Clear communication between families and staff ensures everyone stays informed about weather-related updates or schedule changes.

Indoor Fun on Snowy Days

When outdoor play isn’t safe, snowy days provide opportunities for cozy indoor activities. Children can enjoy winter-themed crafts, sensory play, movement games, and storytelling that keep them active and engaged while staying warm indoors.

Working Together for Winter Safety

Snow safety is a shared responsibility. When families and caregivers work together—by dressing children appropriately, practicing safe habits, and staying informed—we create a safer environment for everyone.

At Tomlin Academy, the safety and well-being of our children are always our top priority. Through careful planning, supervision, and communication, we strive to keep every child safe, comfortable, and happy throughout the winter season.
