Celebrating Labor Day: Teaching Young Children the Value of Hard Work

What Is Labor Day?

Labor Day is a federal holiday celebrated in the United States on the first Monday of September. It honors the contributions and achievements of American workers and recognizes the important role that workers play in building and supporting our communities.

Young children may not fully understand what a job or career means yet, but they can begin learning that many people work hard every day to help others.

👩🏽‍🏫 Helping Children Understand the Importance of Work

Children see adults working every day, but they may not always understand what those jobs involve.

Parents and teachers can introduce children to different occupations through conversations, books, dramatic play, and classroom activities.

Talk about people such as:

• Teachers who help children learn

• Doctors and nurses who care for people

• Firefighters who help keep communities safe

• Police officers who serve their communities

• Construction workers who build and repair

• Farmers who grow food

• Chefs who prepare meals

• Bus drivers who help people get where they need to go

• Sanitation workers who keep communities clean

💛 Teaching Children to Appreciate Others

Labor Day provides an opportunity to teach children the importance of saying "thank you."

Children don't need to have a job to understand the value of responsibility.
