Snowy Days and Safety: Keeping Children Safe During Winter Weather

Winter brings excitement, snowy views, and opportunities for seasonal fun—but it also comes with important safety considerations, especially for young children. At daycare, keeping children safe during snowy and icy conditions is always a top priority.

Staying Safe During Snowy Weather

Cold temperatures, snow, and ice can create challenges for daily routines. To ensure children remain safe and comfortable, it’s important to take extra precautions both at home and at daycare.

Some key winter safety practices include:

  • Keeping walkways and entrances clear of snow and ice

  • Encouraging proper winter clothing such as coats, hats, gloves, and warm footwear

  • Limiting outdoor play when temperatures or conditions are unsafe

  • Closely supervising children during outdoor activities

Dressing for the Weather

Proper clothing plays a big role in winter safety. Dressing children in layers helps keep them warm while still allowing them to move comfortably during play. Waterproof boots, gloves, and hats help protect children from cold and wet conditions.

Labeling winter clothing is also helpful to ensure items stay with the correct child throughout the day.

Safe Drop-Off and Pick-Up

Snowy weather can make drop-off and pick-up times more challenging. Slippery surfaces and limited visibility require extra caution. Families are encouraged to take their time, use designated walkways, and remain alert during transitions in and out of the building.

Clear communication between families and daycare staff helps ensure everyone stays informed about weather-related updates or schedule changes.

Indoor Fun on Snowy Days

When outdoor play isn’t possible, snowy days become a great opportunity for indoor learning and creativity. Children can enjoy winter-themed activities, sensory play, movement games, and storytelling that keep them active and engaged indoors.

Working Together for Safety

Snow safety is a shared responsibility. When families and caregivers work together—by dressing children appropriately, staying informed, and practicing caution—we create a safer environment for everyone.

At Tomlin Academy, the safety and well-being of our children always come first. We remain committed to providing a warm, secure, and nurturing environment, no matter the weather.
